A terrific rainstorm
struck Kaukauna on Monday noon. The rain created a large stream down Crooks and
Quinney avenues and flooded the downtown area of the city. The hardest hit was
Kromer's Hotel, who suffered water damage in the lower level and filling the
cellar.
Poor commissioner N. D.
Schwinn went to Milwaukee with Lawrence
Davidshofer last Friday to place him in an institution conducted by the Sisters
of Mercy, where poor people who are over 60 years of age are cared for. Davidshofer
was a long-time charge of the city. It may be possible that other permanent
city poor will be disposed of in the same manner.

A deal was passed last
Saturday whereby the south side school district becomes the owner of the Peter
Schneider corner in the block occupied by Nicolet School, thus giving the
district the entire block for school site. The consideration was $900 and
includes the building which will be sold and removed. Mr. Schneider set a price
of $1700 on this property several years ago, but the board of directors
considered that an exorbitant price and said they would wait. The waiting game
seems to have won out.

Quite a novel sight was
witnessed on Wisconsin Avenue Thursday afternoon. A large swarm of bees from an
overflowing aviary near the city, settled down on the north side of the street
just in front of the empty Reuter store, where a large pigweed grew by the side
of the curb. This weed was selected as a
nucleus of the swarm. John Fechter proved equal to the occasion and soon had
the little honey-gatherers crawling into a box which he furnished, after some
sugar he placed inside.
Henry D. Schutte of
this city was preparing to pack articles for his move to Wausau last week.
While rummaging through drawers he came across an old postage stamp which he
brought back home from the war in 1865. The 2-cent stamp was sent by his sister
for him to use for letters home. The stamp bears the image of Andrew Jackson.
The plight of Annie
Oakley, the most famous woman expert in the world with the shotgun and
rifle, was sent to jail in New York last week for stealing in order to get
money for cocaine. Annie Oakley will be remembered by those who have witnessed
the Buffalo Bills Wild West show as a crack rifle shooter who appeared at each
performance.
