Time Machine Trip to August 1933

 

Kaukauna Times – August 1933

August 4, 1933

Smoke poured forth from the stack of the Regenfuss Brewery and the aroma of beer brewing greeted the residents of Desnoyer Street on Thursday morning for the first time since the country went dry fourteen years ago. At about 5 a.m., Brew Master Ernst Eggert, supervised the filling of the huge mash tray with grain, water and other ingredients and then turned on the heat and watched this giant vat go to work.

 

August 11, 1933

In accordance with the National Recovery Act Provisions, Kaukauna stores will start operations under the new codes on August 14. The stores and businesses in our area have been divided into four groups in an effort to maintain uniform procedures and hours of operation.

 

The fact that Janet Gaynor, one of filmland’s notables, passed through Kaukauna Tuesday morning on her way to Lake Minocqua seemed to create a great deal of interest here. The actress and her driver became confused and took the highway to Kaukauna instead of the highway to Shawano. Janet was wearing dark glasses but was noticed by the attendants at the Taylor street gasoline filling station. 

 



August 15, 1933

A couple from Appleton narrowly escaped serious injury when the car they were riding smashed through the bridge on County Trunk Z and plunged 15 feet landing upside down in three feet of water. 

 

August 18, 1933

 

Here’s Jesse Owens of Cleveland, Ohio, East Technical high school track star. Owens set record times in three events at the University of Chicago interscholastic track and field championship meet at Soldier field, Chicago.


Howard Paschen won the city tennis championship Sunday morning when he defeated Bob O'Boyle in two straight sets. Paschen and O'Boyle were the two survivors of twenty-six players who started in the tournament last week.

August 25, 1933

The Regenfuss Brewing; Company of this city is in the process of changing their name to the Electric City Brewing Company, according to Theodore Oudenhoven, president of the company.

  

An estate of $9,700 was left by John D. Lawe, late of the city of Kaukauna. Most of the relics and articles that were collected during his life are bequeathed to the Public museum at Green Bay.

 

The House of David ball club will play in Kaukauna next Tuesday evening at 8:15 pm.


August 29, 1933

Three men miraculously escaped serious injury Friday evening when the car in which they were riding ran into a tree on West Seventh street. Occupants of the machine were John Kappell, Arthur Kappell, and Henry Heiting. The accident resulted when the driver’s door opened as they were making a turn.

  

Employees of the Badger Tissue Mills will work under the NRA code on Friday. All employees will work only 40 hours per week but will continue to receive 50 hours’ pay. The Badger Tissue Mills have been preparing for work under the code and have now doubled their force.
