February 3, 1954
With the completion of
his rounds Saturday, Alphonse Berens, 910 Desnoyer Street, also completed 31
years as a Kaukauna city letter carrier. He is the only remaining member of the
original four mailmen who started as carriers when free delivery began locally
on February 1, 1923.
E. H. Jennings, president of Thilmany
Pulp and Paper company announced Wednesday at the annual sales meeting the
company sold $21,000,000 worth of products in 1953.
Mary Feldman won the D.A.R. award at Kaukauna High
School. The voting took place during the past week, according to Miss Frances
Corry, who is in charge of the election.
February 12, 1954
The members of the Girl
Scout and Brownie Troops in Kaukauna are busy working on their "Kits for
Korea," a project which is now being carried out on a nation-wide basis by
all troops. The kits contain items for personal use which are virtually impossible
to obtain in Korea at the present time. Each contains a washcloth, a hand
towel, hair ribbon, pocket comb, toothpaste, toothbrush, two yards of elastic,
needle and thread, safety pins and a bar of soap.
February 17, 1954
Principal W. W. Walsh
of the Wrightstown High School submitted
his letter of resignation to the
Board of Education this week and announced that when his present contract expires
on July 1, he will retire from the teaching profession. Walsh has completed
seven years as principal of the Wrightstown High School and has served 30 years
in the Wisconsin school system.
February 26, 1954
Following 29 years of
business in Kaukauna, Mr. and Mrs. Meyer Miller have turned over the ownership
and operation of their furniture store at 124 East Second Street to Gerald
Krueger. Meyers says he is the "oldest" businessman on Second Street
owning the business since 1925.
Daniel Drace, a junior in Kaukauna
high school, died of nephrosis Manday morning. “He was a fine boy, well-liked
by his classmates and faculty”, was the statement from Principal Paul E. Little
about Daniel.
Matt J. Lennert, a
former Kaukauna man, who is an army veteran and a double amputee, has recently
resigned as an alderman in Rockford, Ill., and is moving to California. Matt
left Kaukauna at the age of 18 when he joined the army. He served with the 79th
Division and was wounded in Germany.

The Brotherhood week committee met to organize
the activities from Feb. 21 to 28. Neil McCarty, Father John Mirek, T. H.
Boebel, Abe Golden, Arno Margenau and Rev. John Scheib.
Valentine’s greetings to the Community hospital
were presented Friday by members of the Park school eighth grade. The big red
heart was covered with 130 dimes donated by the class to L. J. Merlo of the
hospital fund. Students left to right are Mary Ellen Sager, Hope Hilgenberg,
Tom Whitman, and Jim Brogan.
Cub scout Pat Coleman had the honor of
receiving the highest award in Cubbing, the WEBELO badge. Shown left to right

and Mrs. Coleman.

Glen Miller, well known Kaukauna sports enthusiast
and currenting with the Chicago White Sox baseball farm system, stopped in
Kaukauna for a visit. White Sox fans may recognize the station wagon he is
driving as the bull pen car.
