February 2, 1934
The students at
Lawrence college at Appleton have erected this handsome chapel on the campus
using more than 62 tons of ice. The structure, which is 18 feet high, is lit at
night by white and colored lights.
Most people have found
out lately that life’s hardest ups and downs have been keeping up appearances
while holding down expenses.
February 6, 1934
Kalupa's Bakers gained
undisputed possession of. first place in the city league where they defeated
Goldin-Berg's, Saturday 29-28.
February 9, 1934
Wisconsin motorists are in no hurry to plunk
down their cash for licenses to operate their cars. Of the 567,000 passenger
cars operating in Wisconsin only 75,000 bare 1934 license plates this week. The
deadline has been extended to March 1.
February 13, 1934
Art Sager, forward on
the league leading Kalupa Bakers team, is the leading individual scorer in the
city basketball league with a total of 122 points in ten games. His teammate,
Bud Koch, is close behind in second place with 101 points.
Miss Laura Deering suffered cuts and bruises and had a general shaking-up yesterday morning. She was riding in a car that skidded on an icy spot-on Highway 41 just north of the city.

Crowds of eager men and women milled around a
civil works office in Madison last Friday. News had spread that morning that
5,500 new jobs would be open this Monday. The crowd went home with dreams
shattered. The new jobs had been authorized, but money for them had not been
allotted.
February 16, 1934
Suffering with what has been diagnosed
definitely as “sleeping sickness”, Miss Mary Van Eperen of Kimberly is
receiving treatment at St. Elizabeth hospital. She was somewhat improved
Monday.
Three mail sacks were stolen from the Northside
Chicago and Northwestern railroad depot in this city Saturday morning. The
sacks were later found near the bridge between Little Chute and Combined Locks
by some boys. It isn’t believed the sacks contain anything of great value.
February 27, 1934
The office of the Weyenberg meat market was
robbed on Saturday evening. The thief left with $167 from the cash draw. No one
noticed the money being taken. Mr. Weyenberg, owner of the business, was absent
from the shop at the time of the robbery.
Two Kaukauna boxers will appear on the amateur
card at Appleton Thursday night when the Appleton Legion stage their monthly
fight at the armory. Dago Schuler will make his debut. Steve Andrews will also
be on the card that evening.
People who borrow their
neighbor’s newspaper might send in a check and have it sent to them regularly.
