February 5, 1975

A theft of about $45 from Van Zeeland Implement was discovered by patrolling police officers Sunday morning. Later that day another breaking was discovered down the same road at the Hyland House Supper Club. The break in of the juke box was not successful. An apple pie was taken, and that evidence was destroyed by being eaten in a nearby field.

 

Proudly displaying their winning entries in the Pinewood Derby are three Cub Scouts from Pack 27. First place went to Tim Huss, center, Ken Vander Steen, at left was awarded third place and Todd Henricks, right, came in second. 

 

February 7, 1975

 

Sgt. Fran Wedan is preparing a report in the main office of the new Kaukauna Police Station Offices.

 

A counterfeit $20 bill has turned up in Kaukauna according to James Brogan, vice president of the Bank of Kaukauna.

 

February 12, 1975

 

Dr. John C. Whitman, formerly of Kaukauna, examines a patient in the emergency room at Lock Haven Hospital, Lock Haven, Pennsylvania. Dr. Whitman is a new staff member of the hospital’s emergency room.

 

 

Diane Rott, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Rott, Kaukauna, graduated from Fort Jackson, South Carolina. She will be taking M.P. training at Fort Gordon, Georgia.  

 

February 19, 1975

 

Fred Haas, the Ghosts 167 pounder, is the only wrestler to carry the orange and black into the WIAA Sectional tournament this weekend at New London. Haas will take a 22-4-0 mark into the competition the best by far for the Ghost squad.  

 

February 26, 1975

 

Four newly promoted firemen in Kaukauna are driver engineer Wayne Vanevenhoven, Assistant Chief Thomas Roberts, Capt. Thomas Jansen and driver engineer Jerald Kobussen watched as new firemen Robert Nack and Leon Van Toll study emergency textbooks. 

 

Four KHS girls were selected as basketball princesses to reign over Color Day activities on January 31. Kaye Kroll, senior, Karen Desotell, junior, Carol Schmidt, sophomore and Carol Kerkhof, freshman.

 

Currently showing their artwork at the Bank of Kaukauna Community Center are three Kaukauna residents, Mrs. Betty Van Dyke Driessen, Hank Drechsler and Tom McGinnis.

 

 

Peter Hatchell, a member of St. Aloysius church Boy Scout troop recently received the highest rank in Boy Scouts the Eagle award at the court of honor breakfast.

More than 800 spectators flooded the Holy Cross gym to witness the Kaukauna Boxing Club’s first home boxing card of the season Wednesday evening.

February 3, 1965

Kaukauna defeated Two Rivers 80-68 on the Raiders home court to win a second-place birth in the Mid-Eastern Conference standings.

 

The Kaukauna varsity wrestlers racked up their fourth win Thursday over Neenah 43-10.  They are now 4-0-1 in the league and 5-3-1 overall.

 

Season ticket holders for the Packers home games received renewal notices in the mail this week. The letter accompanying the notice said the Packers have requests for 12,000 additional season tickets and that more seats will be added to the stadium for the 1965 season.

 

Although the temperatures skated to the -20° mark on Saturday, members of the American Legion Post No. 41 held a toll bridge for the March of Dimes from 7 AM to 5 PM on Law Street. $650 was collected by the volunteer workers for the March of Dimes drive. 

 

Funeral services were held Monday for Frederick Peter Steffen, city editor of the Kaukauna Times, who died Thursday of a heart ailment. He was 39. Steffen came to Kaukauna in 1953 and in the 12 years here he made a host of friends. The stories promoting special events earned him many a thank you.

 

Len Hawley bombed a 230 singleton and a 381 two game series to pace the Boys Teenage league bowlers.

 

February 5, 1965

Thilmany Pulp and Paper Company reported record net sales in 1964 a 40,134,286 at the firm's annual stockholders meeting February 4. This represents a gain of 5.8% over 1963 and was the third consecutive record year in sales.

 

February 10, 1965

The Kaukauna Galloping Ghost varsity wrestlers tie for the top spot in the standings with a 39 to 13 victory over Clintonville at the KHS gym Thursday.

 

Dick Walker blasted a 235 game and Don Erdmann fired a 637 series to lead the Keglers in the men's majors February 1 at the Bowling Bar.

 

Lucille Schmidt pounded out a national honor count last Thursday at the Bowling Bar, with a 628 series. This is the second ladies national honor count this season.

 

Workmen at the Keller Structures firm located 2 miles south of Kaukauna on Highway 55, were forced into the subzero cold shortly after 1 PM Thursday as flames erupted and destroyed the building in which they were working.

 

February 12, 1965

 

Mark Bachhuber, 20-year-old Kaukaunan, is home on furlough this week after an exciting and hazardous year in South Vietnam as a member of a US Army helicopter crew. Spec. 4 Bachhuber, a gunner, served on 75 missions of which 26 were involved in direct combat actions.

 

Mike Niesz blasted games of 223, 257 and 214 for a 694 series to lead the Businessmen's league at the Bowling Bar.

 

February 17, 1965

 

Bruce Kilsdonk is shown being presented an award from the U.S. Treasury Department by Kaukauna Postmaster Robert Grogan. Bruce, a seventh-grade student at St. Aloysius school is the first student to complete a savings stamp album in the school program. Looking on is Bruce’s teacher Sister Mary Antonette.

 

A splash of white cream across much of the intersection of Main and Second Street followed a spilled milk accident Tuesday morning. A milk van driven by a Kimberly man, who was picking up cans of milk from farmers, was rounding the corner when a side door opened and six of the large cans toppled out.   Spilled milk – – white ice!

 

Fire damage in the city of Kaukauna for the year 1964 rose to the fourth highest figure in the past decade, according to a report issued by Kaukauna Fire Chief William Haupt. The total estimated loss for the year came to $20,164.

Marine Lance Cpl. Bruce L. Werschem, Kaukauna, is currently stationed with Service Company, Headquarters Battalion First Marine Division Camp Pendleton, Calif.

February 19, 1965

John W. Renn, Kaukauna, has been promoted to Captain while serving at the Army General hospital in Nancy, France.

  

When a fresh snowfall covers the landscape around Kaukauna, Dave Doolittle and his fox hunting buddies are on the trail of the wile game. So far this winter they have bagged 47 foxes and one coyote.

 

The board of directors of the Fox Valley Golf Club has approved the purchase of land for the construction of a new 18-hole golf course at their February meeting. The land lies four miles north Kaukauna bordered on the north by County trunk UU and on the east by Weyers Road. 

 

Michael, 3 left and Robert, 4, Eskimo boys. with their adoptive mother Mrs. Gladys Fravel, visited the fourth grade of Mrs. Andrew Weyers, standing at St. Mary’s Wednesday. Mrs. Fravel operated a store in Point Barrow, Alaska, for the past 15 years, and is now back in town.

 

One hundred and thirteen 7th graders from Kaukauna schools attended the first segment of the Baby Sitting clinic, February 20. The program was held at the Kaukauna Vocational school.  Michael Romenesko is pictured holding little Susan Steffens who was used for the live demonstration. The other babysitters are left to right Jane Giordana, Linda Meinert and Janice Schauer.

 

Robert J. Verkuilen, USN Little Chute, has departed for the Mediterranean. He is aboard the aircraft carrier USS Shangri-La.

 

The Eagle badge the highest award in Boy Scouting was presented to Robert Jansen at the Blue and Gold dinner at St. Mary’s Church cafeteria Sunday evening. February 24, 1965

The grand opening of the new Rose Hill Hide-Away on Hwy 96 between Kaukauna and Little Chute will be Monday, March 1, 1965.

Time Machine Trip to February 1955

February 2, 1955

Master Sergeant John Kramer is visiting his parents on Sarah Street. He has been in the Air Force for the past 12 years and will be leaving for France on February 18.

Pvt. Marvin R. Hietpas is home on a 14-day furlough after completing basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo. He will be returning there for additional training.


The Kaukauna Common Council Tuesday night approved reducing the width of the sidewalks on 2nd street from 12 feet to 8 feet. This change will add 8 feet to the width of 2nd street.


Before a packed house of wild Kaukauna partisans at the KHS gym the Ghosts defeated the Menasha Bluejays by a score of 71-68. The Friday night game was one of the hottest and closest scoring fracases the Kaus have encountered this season. Kaukauna had the usual five starters on the floor against Menasha, Jim Otte serving at pivot, Ray Vils and Joe Van Linn as forwards and Mike Walsh and Jim Rausch as guards. Dan Rausch, Cal Engerson, Ron Welch, Don Ristau and Bruce Kemp will fill in as needed.


Kenneth Schumann, Wisconsin Ave., Kaukauna, enlisted in the Air Force on January 17. He is stationed at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonia, Texas.

 

The roster of wrestlers who will take part in the Lion sponsorship matches at the KHS gym were released. The “pride of Oconto County” Little Atlas at 190 pounds will tangle with Doug Henderson, a 185 pounder from Dallas, Texas. The second match will be between Carol Cook, of Toledo, Ohio and Lynn Livingston of Webster, New York two rugged wrestlers.


February 9, 1955

A Kaukauna youth, Clifford Hook, Desnoyer Street, was included among the eight men of Outagamie County inducted into the armed forces in February.


Kenneth Schumann, Wisconsin Ave., Kaukauna, enlisted in the Air Force on January 17. He is stationed at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonia, Texas.


February 11, 1955

One of the newest telephone numbers available to local users is 4-0123 “time-of day”. The telephone company reported 56,600 calls to this number in a recent 5-day period. 




Webelo’s awards, highest honor in cub scouting, were awarded to Richard Swanningson and Pat Ryan who appear with their mothers and Mervin Hansen cub scout master of Pack 27 at St. Mary’s Scout-O-Rama and Blue and Gold dinner. 

Dale Siebers and Robert Greenwood, shown with their parents, received the Eagle Scout badges.

Harold F. Faust is currently spending a 25-day leave at the home of his parents Mr. and Mrs. Michael Faust of Kaukauna. For the past eight months he has been stationed with the U.S. Coast Guard at Neah Bay Station, Wash.


February 16, 1955

The Kaukauna Saving and Loan Association re-elected all officers at its recent annual meeting. They are C. J. Hansen, president; W. C. Hess, vice president; Leo H. Schmalz, secretary, treasurer and manager.

 

Pvt. Earl T. Jacoby, W. 5th Street, Kaukauna, left recently for Fort Sill, Okla., where he is stationed with the army. 

 

Donald R. Kessler, yeoman second class, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Kessler, Kaukauna, is serving at Sangley Point in the Philippine Islands with Administration.

A/2C James L. George, son of Mr. Mrs. Hurbert George, Kaukauna. Writes to his parents that the weather in France is similar to back home. He has been stationed in France since November. 

 

February 23, 1955

Green Bay Packer Coach Lisle Blackbourn announced the Packers will select players in the 1954 crop of college players that will fill positions weakened by retirement and by the draft of the armed forces. The Packer’s first pick was Tom Bettis, offensive guard. The next pick was Jim Temp, of Wisconsin, who played offense and defense.

 

Keith Head

 

The Wisconsin and northern Michigan Golden Gloves championship was held at the Milwaukee Arena. Keith Head of Kaukauna took on John Ruskis of Escanaba, Michigan in the 160 to 175 class. Ruskis, who is quite a bit taller than Head and had a reach advantage, gave the Kaukaunan some difficulty in the opening rounds connecting with a right to the nose of Head in the second round that made the blood flow. Head’s hammering blows in the second had the Escanaba boy holding on as the bell sounded. Head’s TNT loaded fists had Ruskis backing up the rest of the fight. Giving the Kaukauna boy the win.

The Tennessen brothers, Bill and Louis paused temporarily while cleaning out their operations at the Farm Equipment Company on Second Street to pose in front of the building where they maintained their blacksmith shop and farm equipment building for more than 30 years. The building was sold to Henry Carstens and Son.

Pvt. Theodore L. Tilly, route 3, Kaukauna, is home on leave and will leave for Aberdeen, Md., where he is now stationed with an ordnance company.  


February 25, 1955

The Green Ghosts of Kaukauna’s Holy Cross School last Saturday became the uncontested champions of the City Grade school basketball league as they round up the season undefeated in nine starts. The lads trained under the coaching of Dave Flanagan and Robert Main. St. Mary’s from the south side were the second-place winners, Trinity Lutheran came in third with a 3-6 record and Park took the cellar spot with but two wins.
