May 1, 1942
A two-week illness
proved fatal Tuesday to Mrs. H. S. Cooke, 83, Catherine Street,
Kaukauna. She was the oldest member of the Methodist church here and was an
ardent church worker.

Promer of this city scored 187 hits out of a possible 200 to lead the group of
2350 men competing in range fire at Camp Robinson, Ark.
Hugo Lemke was installed commander of Electric City
Post No. 3319 Veterans of Foreign Wars at a meeting Monday evening.
Nine men from the city of Kaukauna or among a
group of 32 selectees from Outagamie County who were accepted by the United States
army after physical examination in Milwaukee Saturday. J. J. Martin, Frank Vils,
Melvin R. Tate, Melvin E. Hildebrandt, Lester H. Luedke, Robert S. Grogan,
Francis J. Landreman, Harold P. Feller and Karl H. Minkebige.
The students at Park grade school purchased
$137.35 worth of war savings bonds and stamps Tuesday, Miss Maria Appleton
reports. During the month the students at Park school purchased $498.06 in
bonds and stamps.
May 8, 1942
Dianna Kilgas, four-year-old daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Mark Kilgas, Kaukauna, was the first pupil in the Nicolet
school kindergarten to purchase a war bond. She saved her pennies and dollar
bills she had received as gifts to purchase a $25 war bond.
A total of 8096
Kaukauna residents are registered under the sugar rationing program, according
to a report received from J. F. Kavanaugh, in charge of the program in the
city.
Twenty-nine youths left the city NYA “National Youth Administration workshop” during April for private employment. All the youths secured jobs in war production in the area
King John Roberts and Queen Miss
Dorothy Hopfensperger will lead the grand march for the 1942 junior prom
Thursday evening. The theme of the prom is May Time with a lighted May pole in
the center of the dance floor.
May 13, 1942
Neil J. McCarty was one of 557 Notre
Dame University students to graduate Sunday. He graduated with magna cum laude
honors.
A bird from the George Wydeven loft, won first
place in a race sponsored by the Kaukauna Pigeon club. The Wydeven bird flew
the distance of 120 miles leaving Neillsville at 7:30 Sunday morning and
arriving at its loft at 10:25.
Marvin Trettin, Boy Scout Troop 20, received
the eagle scout award Monday evening at Outagamie Rural Normal school. The
eagle scout award is the highest rank which can be won by a boy scout.
May 20, 1942
Lawrence Schiedermayer was selected by the
junior class to attend Badger Boys state at Ripon college in June.
Schiedermayer, who frequently tops the honor roll, is a letterman in football,
a member of the track squad. This spring
he was elected to the National Honor society.
Calvin Spice of Kaukauna was individual star at the
track meet at Neenah Saturday. He won three first places and set two new
records.
May 22, 1942
Officers of the Kaukauna High School Alumni Association announced that there will be no alumni rally this year because of the war situation.
A group of nine girls from Kaukauna who
received war production training here at the National Youth Administration
workshop left Wednesday for a Madison NYA girls center where they will receive
advance training in machine shop work.
May 27, 1942
Cal Spice, of the
Kaukauna High School track team threw the shot 45 feet, 11 inches at Madison
Saturday to capture the state title in Class B in that event at the state track
meet. Spice also took a third place in the 120 high hurdles and placed fifth in
the discus. Cleon Egan of Kaukauna participated in the 100- and 200-yard dashes
at the state meet.
May 29, 1942
Walter H. Roloff has
resigned as general manager of the Kaukauna Machine Corporation. The
corporation was formed on December 31, 1938, and Mr. Roloff has served as
general manager since. Prior to that time, he was with the Moloch Foundry and
Machine Company. Alien McKay has been named to fill the vacancy.
Private Dean J. Morrison, formerly of Kaukauna,
has been reported “Missing in Action” in Manila. He was a member of the
military police at the Port of Manila.
Pvt. First Class John Lemke, Lawe Street,
Kaukauna, is “Missing in Action’ in the Philippine area, according to
information received from the war department. Lemke was stationed at Fort
Stotsenburg on Luzon Island. Lemke graduated Kaukauna high school in 1931,
Lawrence college and received his masters from the University of Wisconsin.
Dilman Rodel, Foerster Avenue, Kaukauna, will
be ordained into the ministry at the Evangelical and Reformed church at
Brillion Sunday May 31. The Rev. Rodel attended Nicolet grade school in
Kaukauna, graduated from Kaukauna High school in 1933.
