March 2, 1973

A Kaukauna man was released Monday from St. Elizabeth Hospital after being injured in an Appleton bar fight. Michael W. Blenke sustained head injuries when struck from behind.  Blenke received his injuries when two rival gangs began to fight in the bar. Thirteen persons were arrested of the 50 gang members. 

“Bye Bye Birdie” makes the first of three appearances on the Kaukauna High School stage next Thursday evening. Approximately 70 students are involved in this year’s production.

  

Two Kaukauna cagers, Reed Giordana and Todd Luedtke, were among a group of 13 Fox Valley Association basketball players honored for their performances on the court by area sportswriters.

Berens Clothing store, which has been closed since last fall, will reopen April 2, it was announced Tuesday by Peter Berens, proprietor. 

March 9, 1973

Kimberly coach Jack Wippich was named Coach of the Year for the second season in a row. Kimberly, which has never won a state championship is making its sixth run at the title.

The city of Kaukauna has taken options on about 200 acres of land on the far northside as the first step in the establishing of a long-overdue industrial park for the city.

The Kaukauna Jaycees have recently announced the candidacy of Richard J. Berkers for the office of President of the Wisconsin Jaycees to be held May 12, 1973.

 March 30, 1973

Eugene DeBruin, of Kaukauna, name is not on the list of prisoners who may be released from captivity in Laos, according to the Department of State, but his parents are hopeful that more definite word will be received shortly. Eugene DeBruin, who will be 40 years old this Sunday was a civilian crewman on an Air American cargo plane shot down September 5, 1963, while dropping food supplies over Laos. The pilot and co-pilot were killed in the crash, but Eugene bailed out and was captured. A photograph printed in 1966 in a southeast Asian paper showed some crew members and “Eugene looked very thin” his mother stated.

March 1, 1963

Ed Lutzow rapped a 221 singleton to pace the members of the Teenage Bowling league on Saturday at the Bowling Bar. Gerry Ebben and his father rolled a 796 two-game series to take top father sons division of the Kaukauna Recreation Department sponsored Teenage Bowling tournament.  

 

March 8, 1963

The city's new snow-blower got its first official workout Wednesday in the aftermath of a blizzard which raged through much of the state on Tuesday night.

The Winners of Service Hardware’s Model car contest. Peter DeBruin, Ron Kiefer, James Vander Zanden, Wes Brill, and Michael Huss.

 

Tom Nytes, former star catcher with the Kaukauna High School, the Freedom Village and the Kaukauna Klubbers Baseball team was named the new manager of the Klubbers effective this spring by the Kaukauna Athletic Club board of directors.

LeRoy Weyenberg was elected captain of the St. Norbert College basketball team for the 1963-64 season.

March 15, 1963

The Kaukauna Vocational School will conduct an open house on their newly completed building and the public is cordially invited to attend.  The open house will be Sunday afternoon March 17.

Joseph J. Lingle, commander of the 440^th Troop Carrier Wing and a 1936 graduate of Kaukauna High School, has been promoted to brigadier general in the United States Air Force Reserve. The promotion recommended by President Kennedy and approved by the senate last month.

Kaukauna’s Post 41 will celebrate its 44^th birthday Sunday. A special 45-year membership cards will be issued to 5 members.  They are Walter Lucht, Harry Treptow, Art Schubring, Matt Verfurth, and Lyle Webster. All five of these men have the distinction of having joined the American Legion while still stationed in France following world War I.

Look Drug Store is holding the grand opening of its Southside store today through Saturday. The store has been expanded and remodeled outside and in. We wish them the very best.

Today at 5:00 p.m. marks the deadline for registration of voters planning to participate in the annual spring municipal election, scheduled for Tuesday, April 2, according to Karl Marzahl, City clerk. All persons who have reached their 21at birthday on or before the election date may register and vote in the spring election.

 

 

Gary Weigman, a junior at KHS and Mike Andrews, a sophomore, were elected honorary team captains for the 1963-64 Ghost basketball season according to head coach Gerald Hopfensperger.

March 22, 1963

Kaukauna Common Council went on record Tuesday night opposing the proposed budget of Gov. John Reynolds. The proposal would result in a cut of municipalities’ share of state income taxes.  Mayor Joseph Bayorgeon brought the topic to the attention of the council and the loss of $40,000 would result in increases in local property taxes. 

 

March 27, 1963

Arthur Koehne, an employee of the Kaukauna Post Office for the past 18 years, was recently informed of his appointment as assistant postmaster at Kaukauna, succeeding Mrs. Gen Anderson, who retired from the service on February 28.

 

March 29, 1963

Eighty-two persons died in Wisconsin traffic accidents in the first two months this year, according to the motor vehicle department. This total is the lowest for the first two months of any year in more than a decade. Eleven walkers were counted among victims which are the lowest pedestrian toll in more than 10 years.

 

Harry Hurst fired a 242 singleton and 665 series to take the lead in the singles of the 17^th annual Kaukauna Bowling association “City Champions” tournament.
