Acting Governor Thomas
J. O’Malley has proclaimed a two week "legal holiday," for all state
banks. The proclamation is a result of withdrawals being made in such large
numbers. Mayor Fargo of Kaukauna complimented the local people for the calmness
and confidence in our local banks throughout this depression.
New salaries of city officials were set by the
Kaukauna common council. The council agreed to reduce salaries by 10 per cent
for fire and policemen. The remainder of the city employees would be reduced by
15 per cent.
March 10, 1933
The Legion employment
office was opened in the municipal building on Tuesday of this Week. The office
is particularly concerned with war veterans who are out of work.
1321 transients given a night’s lodging at the
county jail during January and February according to Sheriff Martin Verhagen at
the county jail. This is an average of 22 per day. The first to arrive are
permitted to occupy bunks in the cells, while the rest must sleep on the
floor.
March 17, 1933
Kaukauna banks are
ready to open and are awaiting the state examiners to clear their books. Since
there are only thirty agents checking banks, it is expected to take a few days.
The Kaukauna banks were reluctant to close when the state order was received
and are anxiously waiting the order to open again.
Jerry Vils, center and two-year letterman, was
elected basketball captain for the 1933-34 season, at a meeting of the
lettermen Thursday. Vils was one of the outstanding performers on the team this
season.
Advance, Wis. – A jinx seems to be pursuing the Arno
Stark family. Last fall Mr. Stark lost his mother by death. About two months
ago his brother-in-law was accidently shot. A month ago, the Stark farm home
burned to the ground. Last Saturday Mrs. Stark fell down the cellar steps and
sustained injuries. On the afternoon of the same day while skidding logs one of
the horses fell necessitating it being shot.
March 24, 1933
The Kaukauna High School band will appear in a recital at the auditorium Friday evening at 7:30. O. J. Thompson, conductor will direct the band. Free admission.
Muencher Kind'1 Brau,
Pearl Foam and the regular run of lager beer will be manufactured by the
Regenfuss Brewing Company as soon as Congress legalizes the products.
Seventy Kaukauna women are taking part in the
gym, classes conducted at the Outagamie Rural Normal school.
March 31, 1933
Miss Margaret Fargo, daughter of Mayor and
Mrs. B. W. Fargo, was announced valedictorian of the Class of 1933 of the
Kaukauna High School.
Louis McGillan, Appleton firefighter,
died on March 28 as result of an accident on South Oneida Street. The fire
truck he was in skidded and hit a telephone pole.
