August 5, 1964

Applause thundered spontaneously during the weekend performances at the Kaukauna High School summer musical "The Boy Friend." Near capacity crowds were on hand for each of the three performances, held in the Civic Auditorium.

The circus is coming to Kaukauna, complete with the big-top tent clowns and wild animals. The Kaukauna American Legion is sponsoring the event. The King Brothers three-ring circus will give two performances on August 18 at the Legion grounds on Hyland Avenue.

Kaukauna’s third annual sidewalk sale was a big success according to the retailers and their customers. People found the event exciting. They came early and stayed late.

August 7, 1964

Early this past spring Kaukauna city officials petitioned Outagamie County to turn over the Grignon Home and property to Kaukauna. A citizen’s group was appointed to direct the restoration and acquire historical items for the museum. Since forming the citizen’s committee promotion of the historic site has been carried on. Tour guides have been hired and over 1,000 people have toured the home.

Pre-game ceremonies at the Green Bay Packers – New York Giants exhibition football contest August 15 will include the most valuable players’ awards from last years match. Herb Adderly, defensive back and Jim Ringo, offensive center will get the plaques.

August 12, 1964

William S. Ranquette former manager of the City of Kaukauna Electric and Water departments died Sunday. He spent 41 years in the employment of the Kaukauna utility, retiring as manager in 1961.

David Lang and Mike Walsh were Kaukauna boys who had the good fortune to attend the recent Sixth Boy Scout National Jamboree at Valley Forge. Pa. The boys were 2 of the 38 boys from the Valley council at the five-day event that gathered 52,000 boys from all parts of the world.

August 14, 1964

The assessed valuation of the City of Kaukauna for 1964 has reached a total of $28,437,675 representing an increase of $406,305 over the valuation of last year.

August 19, 1964

All City King and Queen of the eight city parks were chosen. Doug Vande Wettering and Mary Kay Ebben took the honors. They were the representatives of the Frank Lincoln playground area.

Rev. Monsignor Peter A. Salm is listed in fairly good condition at the Kaukauna Community hospital following a car-train collision on Monday. He suffered bruises to his shoulder and arm as well as a concussion.

August 21, 1964

Jane Bambery was one of seven girl scouts and two counselors from the Fox River valley area who took a week-long canoe trip in a wilderness of lovely lakes and waterways that lie astride the border of Canada and the United States. We were three girls three to a tent, camping on rocky shores of lakes so clear you could drink from them.

August 26, 1964

The new 54-bed wing of the St. Paul Home for the Aged was blessed Tuesday morning the Most Rev. John B. Grellinger, auxiliary bishop of Green Bay diocese.

Coach Dallas Werner gave some words of wisdom to three of his returning veterans at the Monday afternoon practice. Left to right are Dick Doering, Werner, Jim Lindell and Don Derus.

A total of 88 candidates for the 1964 Galloping Ghost football team reported this week as uniforms were issued and the initial practice sessions of the season took place under the supervision of head coach Harry Wilson and his assistants Kenneth Roloff and Dallas Werner.

August 28, 1964

A public open house in the recently completed -new wing will be held at the St. Paul Home for the Aged, 509 West Wisconsin Avenue, from 1:00 to 4:00 on Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Tours throughout the building will be conducted by guides who have been preparing for the event under the direction of Richard Kuehn, a member of the lay committee. On Tuesday, September 1, new residents will begin occupying the rooms, and the home, which has been a much hoped for dream for five years.

Ninety-four students who will be college bound this fall are currently spending their summer vacations working for the Thilmany Pulp and Paper Company. Employing students for the vacation relief is part of Thilmany Aid to Education by earning part of their education. The program was first established in 1953.

After a three-week delay in New York City, due to illness, Kaukauna High School’s new foreign exchange student, Stavros Panteli Kazakos, a Greek resident of Famagusta, Cyprus, arrived in Milwaukee, where he was met by Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Heindel and family who will serve as his adopted family for the 1964-65 term.

Winning was a pleasure for Kenny Steffen, when he emerged as All City Obstacle Race Champ in the Tot division at the Kaukauna Recreation department Tournament at LaFollette Park. Gary Yingling. Left was the champion of the intermediate class and Roger VerVoort, right, took honors in primary division.

Best boy and best girls of the Year at each of the city’s playgrounds were presented with awards on August 13.
