The weather this week
has been such as would please the worst kind of chronic gambler. Such mild
temperatures and bright clear days are seldom known during December in this
latitude.
New Washington, Ind. - Four burglars committed a number of
break-ins on the night of the 29th. They were spotted and a chase
began, they were caught, and a fight took place. One was killed and the Marshal
was shot three times. The chase was renewed and another of the pursuers was
shot dead and his murderer was captured. One of the remaining two burglars took
a team from a farmer at the point of a revolver. The team ran away throwing him
out and then the pursuing part came up and bored him full of holes. The last
man was afterwards captured. The Marshal will recover.
Gov. Murray, of Utah,
says the Mormons aim to establish a polygamist empire. They have control of the
public schools and the legislature and are gaining strength rapidly. He is of
the opinion that a sanguinary conflict is inevitable.

The roads are rough,
and farmers cannot get to town.
Consequence: business dull; remedy, a good fall of snow.

News from Hong Kong
report that a French expedition of 6,000 men started several days ago from
Hanoi for Sontay. The troops landed seven miles from the town without meeting
the enemy or firing a shot. The enemy’s force is estimated at 20,000 men.
Russia’s financial condition seems to be about as unhealthy
as that of a disturbed empire. The budget shows a deficit of 24,000,000 rubles.
The treasury contains only 8,000,000 rubles with 50,000,000 of interest due
abroad. What with the threats of the
nihilist and the demand of creditors, the czar’s dreams are in trouble.
Philadelphia, Pa. – Richard Wagner, a native of Lodz, Russia
has been employed for several years in the cotton Mills here. He is 32 years of
age and a nationalized citizen of this country. Wagner received a letter from
home telling him to return immediately to claim his portion of his father’s
estate. He returned to Lodz to settle the matter. Wagner employer has received
a letter informing him that Wagner will not be returning to the United States
as he had been arrested and has since been send to Siberia for life. Wagner’s
case will probably be investigated by the department of state.

An Irishman was
installed in a Boston oil store as a roller of barrels. He found himself alone
in the store when the telephone bell sounded. A sample of certain fish oil was
wanted by the caller. Pat went to the shelf and retrieved the sample and returned
to the phone. The caller asked him to bring the samples to him to see. Here was
a dilemma. Pat knew he could not leave the store unattended, so he uncorked it
held it up close to the transmitter and shouted, “Can you tell by the smell of
it”?
Word has been received
of the capture of Billy Younger, the terror of Missouri for several years, by
the sheriff of Loudon County, Tennessee.
The two highest
salaried governors of the states are those of New York and Pennsylvania, who
receive $10,000 a year each. California, Nevada, and Illinois paid $6000
yearly. Colorado, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, New Jersey, Virginia, and
Wisconsin are paid $5,000. Most of the other governors are paid from $1,000 to
$3,000.
