Time Machine Trip to December 1943

 December 3, 1943

 

H. F. Weckwerth, manager of the electric and water department, received word from the director of the office of the war utilities, asking the American people to confine Christmas lighting decorations to Christmas trees inside of private homes. The department also asked that street decorations, community Christmas trees, exterior home decorations not be eliminated.

 

December 8, 1943

The Kaukauna police department recovered a bicycle owned by Donald Moore. It was left at the Park school.

 

 

With “Darkie” Ristau” pouring in 15 points Coach Guy Krumm’s Kaukauna high school cage team copped their first win of the season by a score of 33-19 over West De Pere in a non-conference game here Friday.

 

William Wolf, curator at the historic Grignon home has announced that the 30-foot flagpole from the old Outagamie county courthouse has been donated to the Grignon home. The old one was broken during a storm last summer.

 

Three members of the McGowan family, a father and two sons are now in service. The father, Joseph F. McGowan, enlisted in the merchant marine and is stationed in England. He is a veteran of the first World war. Son Jim enlisted in the navy and Joseph Jr. is serving in the medical corps.

Private Isidore J. Lucassen, aged 32 years, was killed in action November 8 in Italy, according to word received by his mother, Mrs. Mary Lucassen, Little Chute from the war department Saturday night. He served about a month in North Africa before going into Italy with the Fifth American army. He was an infantryman.

 December 10, 1943

The total purchase of war savings stamps and bonds in the public school system amounted to $33,919.35 during the period of January 15, 1942, and December 1, 1943.

 

December 15, 1943

The Joseph Lappen family, Main avenue, received word that their son Private Donald R. Lappen, 19, was seriously wounded in action in Italy on November 20.

 

December 17, 1943

Miss Mary Ward, employed in the finishing room at the Thilmany Pulp and Paper company, is the first woman to be accepted into the membership in the Thilmany Quarter Century club. 


December 22, 1943

Wisconsin traffic deaths totaled 361 at the end of 11 months this year, a drop of 33 percent from the 539 deaths recorded in a similar period last year. Outagamie County had 8 fatalities this year and the same amount last year during the first 11 months.

 

December 29, 1943

The Kaukauna School of Vocational and Adult Education has moved all its equipment and offices from the municipal building to the former National Youth Administration Building at 103 Oak Street.
