April 4, 1973

Kaukauna police officers are investigating a number of instances in which windows were damaged by gunfire on Sunday evening. The most violence occurred was at Deering’s Super Value where eight plate glass windows were struck by shots, and flying glass injured three people, none of them seriously. The gunfire reported at 10:45 PM appeared to come from a passing truck headed west on Sarah St. The bullets were surmised to have been a 22-caliber type.

The Wisconsin State division of motor vehicles has reminded motorists that Sunday, April 1st. is the deadline for the removal of studded snow tires in Wisconsin.

 

April 6, 1973

Reverend John De Wilde, former pastor of Saint Paul's Catholic Church Combined Locks, was honored on his 92nd birthday anniversary April 2. Friends stop by throughout the day to visit Rev. De Wilde at the Saint Paul home, where he now resides.

  


April 11, 1973

Stormy weather with visibility reduced to a minimum visited the area causing drifting and snow clogged streets in town.

Aviation Maintenance Administration Airman George Greenwood has been named Reconnaissance Attack Squadron Five’s “Sailor of the Month” for the month of March. Commander H. L. Klein presented Airman Greenwood with a letter of commendation in a ceremony aboard the aircraft carrier USS Ranger. Airman Greenwood is the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Greenwood 11th Street Kaukauna.


Snow or no snow, the second annual Raider All-Sports ball will be held this Friday, April 13 at Van Abel’s in Hollandtown. Last year 75 former Raiders attended the ball. Raiders Coach Bob Wurdinger said that the number could double this year. Some of the guests came from as far away as 300 miles and the ball brings many old Raiders that are now in college home for the weekend.


April 13, 1973

No need to ask Jodi Wurdinger, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Wurdinger, how she enjoyed the spaghetti at the 1973 Holy Cross Athletic Banquet last Thursday night. The expression on her face tells the whole story.

 

Joseph Shoes and Sew ‘n Sew Fabrics will move from their present location into the former Luedtke 5c to $1 Store building on Wisconsin Ave., it was announced Thursday by Joseph Vanderloop, proprietor.

 

April 18, 1973

Kaukauna police officers are investigating the theft of a large amount of cash and checks from a north side clothing store Friday evening. A report by Donald Grissman, operator of the Bottom Half, on Wisconsin Ave. said that he found that $900 in cash and checks were missing from the cash drawer Friday evening. A clerk at the store said there was at least one customer while she was at work and that the money was found missing by Grissman when he returned.

 

April 20, 1973

The general discussion of the relocation of Hwy. 55 has been scheduled for Monday by Outagamie county highway commissioner. The discussion will center on a proposed change in the highway’s location from the present route through Kaukauna to a different route which would take it west of the city near the Electa Quinney school and northwesterly toward Sanitorium road.

A plaque with an inscribed gavel was presented to retiring Alderman George Simon (center0 as he attended his last Common Council meeting after 19 years of service. The presentation was made by James McDaniel on the left and Mayor Robert LaPlante.

 

April 25, 1973

Dr. Alphons E. Bachhuber, Kaukauna physician for 38 years, died at the age of 70 early Monday afternoon of a long illness. Dr. Bachhuber had retired two years ago. His course was set in medicine early in life as his father was a doctor and he followed in his footsteps.

 

A 10-year-old Kaukauna boy remains hospitalized in Appleton after he was struck by a bus Saturday morning shortly before noon. Reports indicate that Robert Lauer was riding his bicycle down the hill in front of the Kaukauna swimming pool, and rode onto Dodge St. into the path of a Kaukauna bus service driven by Raymond W. Feick. The boy was treated at the scene then sent to the hospital. He remains in intensive care. Feick was not charged in the mishap.

 

April 27, 1973

44 young performers will take the stage at the Kaukauna civic Auditorium Sunday night as Kaukauna Recreation Department presents its 18th annual dance review. The program “Joy to the World” was put together by Mrs. Pat Kloehn and Mrs. Lois Schommer, the KRD dance teachers.

Bob Skoronski, a steadfast performer, and offensive tackle of the Green Bay Packers will be the featured speaker at the 7th annual KHS All Sports and Hall of Fame Banquet Saturday night in the school’s cafeteria.

Rep. William Rogers - A crowd estimated at 2500 packed the state capital at Madison to express their views and hear discussion on one of the most controversial issues ever to hit the state's political scene. The hearing before the assembly committee was thought to be the largest ever held in the history of the state according to representative William Rogers of Kaukauna. The bills deal with the Wisconsin abortion laws.

April 3, 1963

The new paper machine at Thilmany Pulp and Paper Company produced its first web of paper last week, and currently is undergoing numerous tests. No. 13 paper machine marks the completion of a $10 million plant improvement and expansion program.

 

April 5, 1963

Fred Reuter, of Kaukauna, chalked up the first perfect bowling score in the history of the Knights of Columbus league in Kaukauna. The 300 score was the first one for Reuter and according to loop secretary, Bill Blenke, every one of his shots were right in the pocket with all the pins flying.

Mayor Joseph Bayorgeon called upon the Kaukauna Police department at the council meeting to assist in solving a long-standing problem of the city. The mayor asked the police to take a count of the Main Avenue crossing being blocked by Chicago and Northwestern Railroad cars and to note the amount of time involved and the train number. Not only is traffic backed up for blocks at a time but both police and fire emergency vehicles are stopped. The mayor questioned the accuracy of the 10-minute law the state allows for blocking traffic and many times the road is blocked for longer times.  


Three Kaukauna juniors have been selected to attend the 22nd Annual Badger Girls State at Madison in June. Sharon Chamness, Kitty Collins, and Teri Jurgensen were selected by the faculty on the basis of outstanding qualifications of the students, such as leadership, courage, honor, loyalty, and service.


April 10, 1963

The Kaukauna Galloping Ghost volleyball team lost their first game of the State tournament then won the next two to finish fifth in the finals.

 

Twenty-one KHS students received straight A’s for the third-nine week period. Thirty students qualified for the average A honor roll.  

 

April 12, 1963

Joseph Schuh was elected commander of the Kaukauna Electric City Post 3319 of the VFW at the unit’s annual election held Tuesday. Schuh succeeds Roland Geurts to the office.

 

April 17, 1963

David Hartjes was recently elected president of the Kaukauna Rotary club succeeding Leo Schmaltz. Mark Nagan was named vice president while D. J. Bordini was elected secretary and Luther Kemp treasurer. 

 

Mrs. John Mau, Jr., was named president of the Kaukauna Jaycettes at a recent meeting.   

 

April 19, 1963

Open house was held Saturday and Sunday at the new Fargo Funeral Home at Depot Street and Wisconsin Avenue.

Alderman Earl Luedke was elected president of the new common council at the first meeting of that body held Tuesday evening.

Miss Rhonda Trettin will be among the performers appearing in Sunday’s ballet production of the “Snow Queen”. Sponsored by the Kaukauna Jaycees.

 

April 24, 1963

Anthony Schlude had qualified as a National Merit Finalist, and recently announced by the corporation is being honored with a letter of recommendation praising his scholastic ability.


Two young women from Kaukauna, Miss Nancy Morgan, and Miss Joanne Kappell, have been named semi-finalists in the annual Miss Appleton contest according to a recent release from the junior Chamber of Commerce of Appleton sponsors of the pageant. 

1963 Junior Prom, senior representatives Gary Schwalenberg and Ruth Van Zeeland; sophomore representatives are Wayne Steinbach and Nancy Tatro. Freshman representatives are Mark Nussbaum and Patricia Landreman.

April 1, 1953

The biggest Sturgeon ever to be discovered in the state was found in a state of exhaustion on the north bank of the third locks. The fish tipped the scales at 260 pounds. Conservation wardens were contacted last night by phone and said only that sturgeons have been known to attempt the journey up the Fox River to spawn...enough of this. Certainly, readers know by now that today is the opening day of the fishing season and April fool’s Day.

Kaukauna citizens have through Friday to visit one of the city’s three new automatic voting machines to receive instructions on their operations. Three of the 12 machines to be used by the city next Tuesday.

 

Fourteen area men were part of the 33-men draft which left for induction at Milwaukee from Outagamie County according to the selective service board. Leaving Kaukauna were James A. Simon, Robert Grogan, Norbert Evers and Gerald Vanden Heuvel. From Little Chute are Herald P. Arnoldussen, Richard Cotnoir, Jerome Van Asten, William Vander Loop, Sylvester Vanden Hogen, Clyde Lemke, Arthur Pennings, Jr., and Orville Evers.  Two men from Kimberly are Everett Rooyakkers and Vernon Schuh.


Gerald Lopas has been named a member of the Kaukauna police force according to Police Chief H. V. Engerson.


April 8, 1953

Thilmany Pulp and Paper Company announced Tuesday the completion of the main item of the $12,000,000 modernization program-the No. 11 paper machine has gone into operation. The block-long giant stands beside its running mate, No. 9, another Beloit Stationary Fourdrinier machine, built twelve years ago in the lower mill.

 

April 10, 1953

The Kaukauna city police force has acquired two new officers in as many weeks. The latest addition is Charles Arnold, who began his duties on Monday as a replacement for Officer Lester Luedtke, who tendered his resignation in March.

 

Thomas Hilgenberg and James Schlude were the two boys chosen in an election held Friday to attend Badger Boys State at Ripon college this summer.

 

April 15, 1953

Eugene De Groot, 10, son of Mr. and Mrs. Francis De Groot, has been chosen by the Barth Accordion School, Fond du Lac to put on a baton twirling act for their concert April 22. Eugene will twirl single and flag baton.  

Mary Verhagen   -     Carol Zwick  -     Janis Mislinski  -  William West will be presented with silver medals. They are the four Kaukauna high school students who took part in the state forensic contest held on April 11th in Madison.  

 

April 17, 1953

Eleven area man were inducted in the 30-man draft which left yesterday morning for induction at Milwaukee according to the Outagamie selective board. From Kaukauna are James Terry, Melvin Stephens, Francis Gerow, Mark Golden, William McGinnis, Bernard Weyers. and Orville Green. From Little Chute William Verhagen and David Bowers, from Kimberly Thomas Van Elzen.

 

April 24, 1953

Sergeant Oscar Jahns of the city police force swore in the members of the Holy Cross safety patrol at a ceremony at the school on Wednesday morning. Sergeant Jahns, who supervises safe patrols in all of the Kaukauna schools had high praise for all the members of the Holy Cross safety patrol.


The Fox River navigation company’s season officially opened on Friday having received the government go ahead when the companies two tugboats moved through the Kaukauna locks.  According to James Bambery of the navigation company, full-time operations are now expected to continue throughout the season.
